Steel frame walls for house extension construction
The principal of steel frame building methods is very similar to timber framing except galvanised steel
is usually used in place of wood.
There are now a few steel frame walling systems used for new housing but it has yet to take off as a commonly
found method within the UK.
Steel frame housing systems were developed and used in the 1950's and 60's but many systems failed due to
corrosion and the lack of understanding for condensation within the building fabric.
Modern design techniques and how materials relate or interact with each other for various weather
conditions should have cured any perceived problems or worries but the fear of being saddled with a hard to sell,
non standard property still persists to this very day.
I have never seen a steel frame house extension other than for some highly glazed extensions or localised steel
beams onto steel posts for wide openings within standard masonry construction.
