Energy efficiency in loft conversions
Loft conversions are important; they can provide new, energy efficient accommodation and
can also improve the overall energy efficiency of the houses. Converting a loft into a living area provides more
space but need not increase heat losses or fuel costs.The homeowner can quickly recover any additional costs for
energy efficiency measures through reduced fuel bills. Payback periods are usually less than seven years, and fuel
costs are reduced for the entire life of the building.
The three most important factors that contribute to energy efficiency are:
• the level of insulation and the air-tightness of the walls and roof;
• the choice of fuel and the efficiency of the heating system;
• the efficiency of lights and electrical appliances.
